En septembre je vais commencer ma troisième année de BAC à McGill en développement international et en anthropologie.

I am currently in my third year at McGill University completing a bachelor of arts. I am majoring both in international development studies and anthropology.

Pourquoi es-tu intéressée par ce projet? / Why are you interested in this project? 

La Maison Nivard-De Saint-Dizier est l’un des sites dont nous avons souvent entendu parler à l’école. L’époque historique, d’où ces sites proviennent, est un sujet bien étudié. Lors de mes études, j’ai beaucoup appris sur l’histoire coloniale au Québec, mais peu sur ceux qui étaient là avant. Leur histoire est racontée dans le contexte archéologique. C’est pourquoi j’étais très enthousiaste par ce projet qui promettait de remonter le temps jusqu’à 5 000 ans avant aujourd’hui. Cette période préhistorique est fascinante, et j’espère être une des étudiantes qui aura la chance de trouver un éclat de roche travaillé ou un nucleus, ou encore un fragment de poterie iroquoienne. À la fin de notre travail, je suis persuadée que j’aurai non seulement approfondi mes connaissances historiques, mais aussi mes compétences en méthodes archéologiques.

The Maison Nivard is one of those heritage sites that we hear a lot about at school. The historical period, to which they belong, is well documented. During my studies, I learned all about the colonial experience of Quebec, however I found I knew very little of who came before, as their records are found in the archaeological context. As such, I was very excited at the prospect of deepening my own historical knowledge, as well as my abilities in the field of archaeology. I hope that I will be one of the lucky students to find a flake of worked stone, or a core, or even a fragmented piece of Iroquois pottery and that these in turn will shed a brighter light on the past we all share.

Depuis que je suis toute petite, j’adore être dans l’eau. C’est pourquoi lorsque j’étais en Australie, j’ai appris à plonger. Une fois, notre instructeur nous a emmenés plonger le long d’une île près de la plage Laperouse à Sydney. Plus tard, j’ai appris que cette île avait été un des lieux de tournage du film Mission Impossible 3. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas vu Tom Cruise, mais j’ai pu admirer plusieurs créatures magnifiques et extraordinaires qui vivaient dans ce paradis subaquatique. L’un des animaux les plus intrigants était un gros poisson bleu. Ce poisson était capable de changer de sexe si son espèce avait un besoin reproductif. Lors de mon apprentissage, un de ces poissons est venu vers moi. Avec sa grosse lèvre, il a avalé l’une des bulles qui s’échappaient de ma bonbonne d’air. Depuis, je suis allée plonger plusieurs fois, et à chaque fois j’ai été époustouflée par ce monde incroyable qui se trouve dans l’océan.

Ever since I was small I have loved the water. This is why, during my stay in Australia, I learned how to scuba dive. Our PADI instructor took us to a small island off the tip of Laperouse in Sydney. I later learned this is where they filmed one of the climax scenes of the third Mission Impossible film. Unfortunately I did not see Tom Cruise, but I was able to spot many wonderful and beautiful creatures living in this underwater paradise. One of the most intriguing of them was a large blue fish eloquently called Bluee by locals, who is capable of changing sex from male to female or vis-versa if there is a reproductive need for it. One time, I remember one of them swimming up to me and with its large under lip swallowing one of the air bubbles my oxygen mask was making. I have gone diving a few times since, and each time I feel like I’m entering a brand new world.
