Situation d’étudiant/ Student Situation: Je vais entreprendre à l’automne ma troisième et dernière année de BAC  a McGill en anthropologie (avec un profil ciblant l’archéologie), et j’ai complété  ma mineure en histoire.

I will be starting in the fall my third and last year of undergraduate studies at McGill – I majored in Anthropology (with a focus on archaeology), with a minor in History.

 Pourquoi es-tu intéressé par ce projet? / Why were you interested in this project?

J’entends faire de l’archéologie une carrière, alors ce projet était une opportunité en or pour acquérir de l’expérience sur le terrain. Ceci n’est pas sans dire que l’aspect théorique de l’archéologie n’a pas d’importance : au contraire, les techniques de fouilles, la façon dont on décide de l’importance de certains types d’artéfacts, et même les interactions entre les archéologues et les Premières Nations lors de fouilles qui concernent les ancêtres de ces derniers sont toutes des choses qui sont influencées par l’histoire même de l’archéologie, ainsi que ses débuts en tant qu’entreprise coloniale. Pour cette raison le projet de la Maison Nivard m’intéressait particulièrement, puisque le site  couvre entre autres la période de contact entre les Européens  et les populations autochtones.

I intend to make of archaeology my career, so this project was a golden opportunity to get some field experience. That is not to say that the theoretical aspect of archaeology is of a lesser importance: on the contrary, excavation techniques, the ways in which we decide which artifact categories are worth studying, and even interactions between archaeologists and First Nations peoples in regards to digs concerning their ancestors are all things which were/ are still influenced by the history of archaeology itself and its beginnings as a colonial entreprise. For this reason, the Maison Nivard project was particularly interesting to me, since the site’s occupational period covers, among other things, the period of contact between the Europeans and indigenous populations.

 

Dis-nous quelque chose à ton sujet! / Tell us something about yourself!

Depuis que je suis toute petite je m’intéresse à l’archéologie : pour cela, j’ai les fameuses revues « Les Explorateurs » et « Les Débrouillards » à remercier! Je dois admettre que mon premier choix de carrière était de devenir une biologiste marine, mais lors de ma première année d’université j’ai découvert l’existence de l’archéologie subaquatique – c’est une profession qui rassemble, selon moi, le meilleur des deux mondes (et je préfère de loin les requins aux moustiques et aux guêpes). C’est dans ce domaine que je souhaite faire mes études de maîtrise cet automne.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by archaeology: for that, I have to thank the famous French magazines « Les Explorateurs » and « Les Débrouillards »! Even though I love archaeology with all my heart, I do have to admit that it wasn’t my first career choice when I started looking at university programs; marine biology was. However, during my first year at McGill I was introduced to underwater archaeology, a specialization which encompasses, if you ask me, the best of both worlds (I will take sharks over wasps and mosquitoes any day) – and thus marine archaeology programs are the only ones I will be applying to for Graduate school in the Fall.
