Je viens de terminer la troisième année de mon baccalauréat à l’Université McGill avec une majeure en anthropologie et une mineure en psychologie.

I have just completed the third year of my Bachelor’s degree at McGill University. I am majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Psychology.

Pourquoi es-tu intéressé par ce projet?/ Why are you interested in this project?

L’archéologie est romancée par l’idée de «l’Autre».  Depuis des siècles, les archéologues sont attirés par l’étude des peuples exotiques en pays lointains. Pourquoi je mentionne ceci? Parce qu’il y a une nouvelle tendance en archéologie où l’on étudie plutôt sa propre histoire. Le projet de la Maison Nivard me permet de participer à ce mouvement et de reconstruire le passé de ma région. Également, je suis contente de pouvoir découvrir l’histoire durant la période de colonisation en plus de la préhistoire, et ce sur le même site archéologique. Quelle opportunité! Cependant, je dois admettre que j’ai un faible pour la période préhistorique, car je veux reconstruire le mode de vie des peuples amérindiens du passé.

Archaeology has been romanticised by the concept of “the Other”. That is to say, archaeology has been driven by the study of exotic peoples and mysterious locations for centuries. The reason I mention this is because the Maison Nivard field school gives me the opportunity to study my own history. I can be a part of this new wave in archaeology in which the past is written locally. It is also fascinating to be able to gain experience both with history and colonialism as well as prehistory at the archaeological site. How lucky am I! I do, however, have a soft spot for the prehistoric period of occupation and would like to reconstruct the ways of life of Amerindians from the past.

J’ai toujours été fascinée par les objets du passé. J’ai l’impression d’explorer un autre monde. Depuis mon enfance, je prends plaisir à visiter des musées et à en apprendre sur les antiquités. Ma passion pour l’archéologie, par contre, a grandi après avoir visité une exposition sur l’Égypte ancienne au Musée d’histoire naturelle à  New York. Récemment, j’ai développé un intérêt pour l’étude de l’évolution des humains et pour la zooarchéologie. Dans le futur, j’aimerais étudier les liens entre l’évolution biologique et le développement de la culture chez les humains.

I have always had fascination with things of the past; it feels like exploring another world to me. Ever since I can remember I have enjoyed visiting museums and learning about ancient relics. My love for archaeology, however, grew after viewing an exhibit on Ancient Egyptian civilization at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. Recently, I have developed a weakness for the study of human evolution as well as zooarchaeology. In the future, I would like to learn about the relationship between biological change and the development of complex human behavior such as culture.
