Pourquoi es-tu intéressé par ce projet? / Why were you interested in this project?

Ce projet m’a interpelée car il s’agit d’un projet local. Je veux spécialiser mes études dans cette région du Canada, alors c’est une belle opportunité pour moi de travailler localement. Quand j’ai entendu parler de cette école de fouilles, j’étais déjà intéressée à l’idée de gagner de l’expérience pratique dans le domaine. Puis quand j’ai appris que les fouilles allaient être situées à Verdun, mon intérêt pour le projet a pris de l’ampleur. La région dans laquelle est située le site est marquée par plusieurs milliers d’années d’occupation, et je suis intéressée de découvrir les différents réseaux d’échange qui étaient en place avant la période de contact. En raison de sa proximité des Rapides de Lachine, il s’agit d’un lieu propice aux arrêts (lors de voyagement sur le fleuve), et aux échanges. Étant donné qu’il s’agit de ma première expérience de fouilles, je suis enthousiaste d’acquérir des connaissances à propos des sols, matériaux et conditions climatiques locales.

I was interested in this project because it is a local project. I want to specialise my studies within this region of Canada and I thought this would be a great opportunity to work locally. When I heard about the field school, I was already interested in experiencing archaeology first hand. Then when I found out we would be working in Verdun I was even more excited to apply for the project. The area we are working in has had several occupations on the site over several years so I thought it would be very interesting to see the different trading network systems that were in place before contact. Due to the strategic location after the St. Lawrence Rapids, it seems to be a great resting/trading area. As this is my first field school experience I am excited that I get to have a greater understanding of the local soils, materials, and climate conditions.

Je suis Kanien`kehá:ka de Kahnawake, de la Confédération Haudenosaunee, et je suis membre du Clan de l’ours. Je parle couramment la langue Kanien’keha, et j’ai toujours été intéressée par l’archéologie. J’ai cet intérêt depuis plusieurs années et j’ai voulu avoir une expérience pratique avant de me pencher sur les aspects plus théoriques de cette discipline. J’aime tous les aspects du travail des archéologues, que ce soit de comprendre la nature des sols, ou de maîtriser la technologie associée à la collecte des données. J’apprécie autant la partie salissante du travail dans les tranchées que la partie plus propre associée au lavage des artefacts dans le laboratoire. J’aimerais continuer d’étudier dans le domaine et ainsi compléter une Maîtrise et même un Doctorat en archéologie. Ainsi, je pourrais transmettre mes connaissances et acquis à ma communauté et y enseigner à l’école secondaire.

I am a Kanien`kehá:ka from Kahnawake, part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and I am a member of the Bear clan. I am a fluent speaker of Kanien`keha and have always been interested in Archaeology. I have had this interest for several years and thought I would give the hands on part a try before I started getting into the theoretical aspect of the practice. I enjoy all the different jobs archaeologists have to do from understanding the soil, to using the technology for collecting the data. I enjoy the down and dirty parts, as well as the squeaky clean practices associated with cleaning artefacts in the lab. I want to continue in the Archaeological field and one day get my Master or PHD in Archaeology, so I can give back to my community and become an Archaeology teacher at my local high school.
