À titre d’archéologue, il est impossible de ne pas s’intéresser à ce projet! Quand la Ville de Montréal a contacté notre groupe de recherche à Mc Gill pour ce projet, l’étendue et la période d’occupation du site nous ont étonnés. Mes recherches académiques s’attardent aux périodes de transition des sociétés et à toutes les questions entourant les réorganisations de ces sociétés, particulièrement après une période de stase. L’occupation du site de la Maison Nivard remonte à plus de 5 500 années et couvre plusieurs transitions sociales majeures. Les volets du projet qui s’intéressent à l’enseignement et à la sensibilisation me captivent.

A titre d’archéologue, je considère que le travail avec les étudiants sur le terrain est très gratifiant. J’ai participé à des projets communautaires archéologiques à la Baie-James (Wemindji) et à Nunavik (Kangiqsujuaq). Je suis très enthousiaste à l’idée de conduire un projet semblable dans ma ville natale.

As an archaeologist, it would be difficult not to be interested by this project! When our lab at McGill was contacted by the City of Montreal about this project, we were astounded by the extent of the site and the time-depth of the occupation. My academic research focuses on periods of transition in societies: how, when, and why do people re-organize their societies, especially after a period of stasis. The very long continuous occupation of the site where Maison Nivard is now located (over 4500 years!) covers several major social transitions. I was also very drawn to the teaching and public outreach aspects of the project. Working with students in the field is one of the things I find most rewarding as an archaeologist. I have participated in community-based archaeology projects based in James Bay (Wemindji) and Nunavik (Kangiqsujuaq) and I am very excited to be running one in the city where I grew up.

Parle-nous de toi/ Tell us something about yourself!:

Mon projet doctoral porte sur la mobilité croissante des chasseurs-cueilleurs complexes entre la période néolithique et l’âge de fer dans le nord du Finlande. Pendant cinq saisons j’ai participé à des études sur le terrain près de la municipalité de Yli-Ii dans l’Ostrobotnie du Nord. J’aime ce paysage de forêts de pins et de marées (et la présence occasionnelle de rennes). J’ai eu l’occasion d’apprécier plusieurs aspects de la culture finlandaise, notamment la pulla (une patisserie délicieuse) et les Moomintrolls.

My PhD project concerns the increase in mobility between the Neolithic and the Iron age among complex hunter-gatherers in Northern Finland. I have done five field seasons near the town of Yli-Ii in Northern Ostrobothnia. I love the landscape of pine forests and bogs (with the occasional reindeer), and I have come to appreciate many aspects of Finnish culture, including pulla (a wonderful Danish) and Moomintrolls.
